Walk the yard

A walk round a farm, with an IT man.

Every building on a farm has something in it that needs a signal, a backup or a camera. Tap round the yard to see what goes wrong where, flip to After Milsch to see it fixed, and come back after dark to see the camera on the gate.

The farmhouse

What goes wrong

Two feet of Cotswold stone. The Wi-Fi works in the kitchen and gives up at the back bedroom.

What Daniel does

Mesh Wi-Fi: two or three access points, wired where possible, one network in every room.

Wi-Fi and networks

Before: the farmhouse router's signal fades out before it reaches the buildings.

The whole walk

Building by building

  1. The farmhouse

What goes wrong. Two feet of Cotswold stone. The Wi-Fi works in the kitchen and gives up at the back bedroom.

What Daniel does. Mesh Wi-Fi: two or three access points, wired where possible, one network in every room.

  2. The farm office

What goes wrong. The only copy of the invoices is on a laptop older than the dog, and MTD wants the books online.

What Daniel does. A machine that copes, email on your own name, backups every night and the MTD software connected.

  3. The milking parlour

What goes wrong. The parlour PC runs the milking, nobody dares touch it, and its drive could die at 5am any morning.

What Daniel does. A proper network to the parlour, the PC backed up with a restore plan, agreed with the manufacturer.

  4. The big barn

What goes wrong. Cameras and sensors need a signal out here, and a cable across the yard isn't happening.

What Daniel does. A pair of small dishes beams the farmhouse connection across, with an access point inside.

  5. The grain store

What goes wrong. You find out the grain has heated when you open the bin. Too late by then.

What Daniel does. Temperature and moisture sensors on long-range radio, texting you before it becomes a problem.

  6. The workshop

What goes wrong. The diagnostics laptop for the machinery needs updates and a connection, and gets neither.

What Daniel does. Signal into the workshop and the laptop looked after: updates, licences and backups.

  7. The tractor

What goes wrong. GPS correction and telematics need a signal across the fields, not just in the yard.

What Daniel does. A connection where the kit needs it, and the right mobile network for your fields.

  8. The yard gate

What goes wrong. Somebody had the quad away, and the old camera recorded a blur.

What Daniel does. A number-plate camera on the gate, clips to your phone at 3am, and alarms that survive the landline switch-off.

  9. The farm shop

What goes wrong. The card machine drops on Saturday morning, just as the queue reaches the door.

What Daniel does. The till on its own network, a beam from the house and a 4G backup that takes over by itself.

  10. The holiday cottage

What goes wrong. Guests mention the Wi-Fi in their reviews. Not kindly.

What Daniel does. Guest Wi-Fi of its own, kept apart from yours, with a password for the welcome card.

  11. The field

What goes wrong. You'd like to know the trough is full without walking down to check.

What Daniel does. Water-level sensors that report to your phone, on a battery that lasts for years.
