Check your signal

What can your farm actually get?

Type a postcode. See the broadband speeds and each mobile network’s signal, indoors and out, then Daniel’s honest verdict on the best way to get connected.

Only the postcode is sent: to postcodes.io to find the place, and to Ofcom for the coverage. Nothing about you is kept.

The verdict

Four answers, usually

  • Full fibre is here.

Get it. Then the job is making the Wi-Fi reach the farmhouse rooms and the buildings.

  • Superfast is here.

Good enough for most farms. Add a 4G backup so a dropped line doesn't stop the yard.

  • 4G beats the line.

A good router with an aerial on the gable often doubles or trebles the speed of a tired copper line.

  • Neither is any good.

Starlink, with a clear view of the sky, and a 4G backup if any network reaches you at all.

What the numbers mean

What counts as good broadband for a farm?

For a farm office, cameras and a family: 30 Mbit/s down is comfortable, 10 is workable, and under 10 is where Starlink or 4G usually wins. Upload matters too if the cameras stream to your phone.

Why does the mobile signal say good outside and none inside?

Stone walls and metal roofs stop it. An aerial on the outside wall, cabled to a router inside, usually fixes exactly that.

The checker says one thing, my phone says another.

Ofcom’s figures are predictions from a model. Hills, trees and the building itself change the real thing. Daniel measures it on site before recommending anything.

Where does the data come from?

Ofcom’s Connected Nations data, the same that drives Ofcom’s own checker: predicted best speeds for every address, and each network’s coverage indoors and out.
