Windows 10 has ended: what now?

Microsoft stopped updating Windows 10 for most people in October 2025, and the paid year of extra security updates for home users ran out in October 2026. A Windows 10 machine still turns on. It just gets more dangerous to use online every month.

The short answer

If the computer can run Windows 11 and isn't slow already, upgrade it. If it can't, or it's past five or six years old, replace it and move everything across. Don't keep using Windows 10 for banking, email or the farm accounts.

Why it matters

Every month, flaws are found in Windows that let criminals in. Supported versions get fixed; Windows 10 now doesn't. The longer a machine runs unpatched, the more doors are open, and the farm office PC, with the bank, HMRC and the accounts on it, is exactly what they're after.

Businesses can still buy extended updates from Microsoft for a while longer, at a price that rises each year. For a single farm PC it's rarely the best use of the money.

Can it run Windows 11?

Windows 11 needs a reasonably modern processor and a security chip called TPM 2.0, which most computers from about 2018 onwards have. Open the PC Health Check app, or Settings, Windows Update, and Windows will tell you.

  • It can, and it's quick enough: upgrade. Your files and programs come with you. Back up first anyway.
  • It can, but it's slow: a solid-state drive and a clean-out often fix that for much less than a new machine.
  • It can't: replace it. Moving everything across properly is the job that takes the time; that's what Daniel does.

Before you do anything

  • Back up everything: documents, photos, the accounts software's data, email if it's stored on the machine.
  • Find the logins: email, the accounts software licence, printer software, anything you'd need to set up again.
  • Check the farm software will run on Windows 11 (herd, parlour, sprayer and accounts software usually will; ask the supplier).
  • When the old machine is retired, wipe the drive properly before it's sold, given away or recycled.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to keep Windows 10 offline?

A machine never connected to the internet, doing one job, such as running an old piece of equipment, carries far less risk. Keep it off the network entirely.

Will my printer work with Windows 11?

Most printers from the last decade will. Very old ones may not have drivers; Daniel will check before you commit.

What about a Mac or a Chromebook instead?

Both are fine choices if your farm software runs on them, which is worth checking first. Many accounts packages now run in a web browser, which makes the choice easier.
